This 2 day series is designed to enhance the effectiveness of your PLC’s
1) Developing a Learning Community (October 27, 2008)
This workshop provides an overview of the professional learning communities model as it applies to Alberta. Participants will develop an understanding of the concepts, characteristics and culture of a professional learning community.
2) Building a Culture of Learning (October 27, 2008)
To develop a professional learning community teachers must first build a culture of learning. In this workshop, participants will discuss the most important elements of a culture of learning, namely, collaboration, managing change and effective professional development.
3) Focus on Instruction (December 8, 2008)
This workshop asks the question “What do we want students to learn?” Participants will engage in an activity (known as a tuning protocol) that will demonstrate how to give structured, constructive feedback to a colleague. The goal of the protocol is to promote professional reflection and enhance instructional practice.
4) Focus on Student Learning (December 8, 2008)
This workshop asks the question “How well have students learned?” Participants will collaboratively analyze student learning (CASL) and develop a plan for instruction and student remediation. Using samples of student’s work, participants will experience the CASL process and practise giving feedback as a critical friend.
About the presenter: Jacquie Skytt is currently the Coordinator of Professional Development for the Alberta Teachers’ Association. Jacquie has also been a teacher for a number of years and an Education Manager with Alberta Education. In her role, as Coordinator of Professional Development, she provides a variety of workshops across Alberta.
