This program is intended to support students struggling with reading, writing, and research skills. This session provides an overview of the Read & Write Gold program and all of its features. It is a hands-on workshop. You will also begin to explore reading materials in Word, PDF, and html formats. Not recommended for anyone who has already taken a RWG workshop.

This workshop will outline some ways of preventing and responding to the challenging behavior sometimes engaged in by students with autism. Participants are asked to think about students who they work with so we can make this session relevant to your work! The main resource to be used will be Alberta Learning "Teaching Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder".

The best approach to conduct problems in the school and the classroom is to prevent the opportunity for them to occur. Although it is impossible to eliminate all conduct problems, in fact many preventative measures and positive steps may be taken during the course of natural activities to avoid or reduce the disruptions caused by conduct problems. This session will address:
* What are the essential characteristics and support structures that educators need in place to prevent and/or deal with conduct problems?
* How can you promote the students ability and social competence to deal with other problems in the future?
Learn about best practices and the approaches you can take to change children's challenging behavior. This session will provide both preventative strategies and adaptive coping strategies that aim at developing the students' abilities to deal more effectively with stress.
The purpose of this seminar is for the participants to gain an overall understanding of anger. This may be in the workplace or the environment surrounding them. It will alert participants to several different types of anger and how, in turn, to mange them.
While all children with FASD will have their own unique challenges and strengths in terms of behavior and health related issues, there are a few key strategies that will work for most children. Join a Speech Language Pathologist and Occupational Therapist from the Camrose FASD Assessment and Diagnostic team, who will review strategies and suggestions for working with children with FASD.
They may know how to spell it, but do they know how to DO it? Discover simple tools to help children and teens calm down, change their mood, and, consequently, LEARN BETTER! When the close relationship between our breath and our body is understood, we are then empowered to manage anxiety, anger & mood swings one breath at a time! This session also includes a full yoga session for staff.

This session will help Educational Assistants develop various skills and approaches to help contribute to the creation of an inclusive classroom. A range of practical strategies for supporting all students in the general classroom will be explored. This session will emphasize resources and strategies that are most effective in an elementary school setting.
Working together productively doesn't come naturally to everyone. Learn what motivates your behavior, what changes when you are in conflict and how your weaknesses are your strengths overdone. The SDI (Strength Deployment Inventory) is the flagship assessment of a suite of tools based on Relationship Awareness - a learning model for effectively and accurately understanding the motive behind behavior. When people recognize the unique motivation of themselves and others, they greatly enhance their ability to communicate more effectively AND handle conflict more productively. Participants will:

"Live Exercise Scenario Training for school bus drivers provides practical coaching in the management of a school bus accident scene. Drivers are placed in a variety of accident scenarios with live student casualties (role playing) and trained to manage the accident scene and student casualties until emergency medical services (EMS) arrives. Training includes a review of recent school bus accidents in Alberta, how to take charge and assess the accident scene for hazards, prioritizing casualty injuries, proper communication with 911, basic first aid skills and turning over the accident scene to EMS. More than 1800 bus drivers have been trained throughout Alberta over the past 5 years with tremendous success. Our goal is to prepare a bus driver for the worst and to increase their skills and confidence should they be involved in a serious school bus accident."
Rick will present on the Route Risk Assessment Checklist brought about from Recommendation 9 of the School Bus Safety Project Report (April 9, 2010). It was recommended that Alberta Transportation and Alberta Education work with the bussing industry to develop a standardized route risk assessment checklist to ensure that all areas of the province are consistently applying best practices concerning the safety of routes and any modifications required due to adverse conditions such as weather. The Education Ministry has worked closely with the school bus industry to develop a best practice model for route risk assessment and it is ready to roll out. Rick Grebenstein will introduce this route risk assessment checklist model to drivers. The risk assessment checklist will be given to contractors at their annual general meeting so they themselves as well as their drivers will have the opportunity to review the checklist in regards to their own routes and now have the opportunity to discuss any questions with Alberta Education.
Robert will speak to bus drivers about train/railway safety and give them some tips and tricks as to how to contact the appropriate authorities when controlled crossings malfunction or if railway cars are causing visibility issues on their bus route. Robert will give bus drivers information regarding procedures for crossing railway tracks and will share stories that put the importance of train/railway safety into perspective.
This workshop examines the cause and prevalence of drug and alcohol use in your community, impact on students, families, and the school system. The components of this workshop include learning the types of drugs that are currently available, trends in adolescent teenage drug use, which drugs are the most harmful, and how to recognize the signs and symptoms of use. Participants will become aware of the continuum of use, the process of addiction, and resources and interventions available in your community and provincially. A core aspect of drug prevention and awareness is fostering resiliency, so come prepared to share ways to build assets in children, youth and families.

Creating newsletters doesn't have to be overwhelming! By applying some basic skills you can create your own newsletter from scratch or adapt a predesigned template. After completing this hands-on session you will be able to:

* Change color and font schemes.
* Add elements from the design galler such as table of contents, calendars, picture captions, sidebars and more.

Section Breaks: Insert section breaks to allow a mix of both portrait and landscape pages in the same file. Create headers and footers and apply a different header/footer to the first page of the document.

More and more students with autism are being taught in our schools. This workshop will provide you with information about the general characteristics of these students, the selection of appropriate goals, and some effective methods of instruction. The main resource to be used will be Alberta Learning's "Teaching Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders".

Attention-Deficit Disruptive Behaviour Disorder is the most recent term for a specific developmental disorder of both children and adults that is comprised of deficits in sustained attention, impulse control and the regulation of activity level to situational demands. The disorder has had numerous different labels over the past century including hyperkinetic reaction of childhood, hyperactivity or hyperactive child syndrome, minimal brain dysfunction and Attention Deficit Disorder (with or without Hyperactivity). This presentation helps you understand the disorder, highlight special considerations such as the impact on learning, and adapt concepts and explore a variety of strategies and interventions that educational staff can use to address issues in the classroom. The presentation incorporates a variety of skills including: positive behavioural support, functional assessment, and strategies and interventions effective in supporting students with Attention-Deficit Disruptive Behaviour Disorder.

However along with the benefits and opportunities of the vast & stimulating cyber playground there lies a sharper and more dangerous side: anonymity, personal over-disclosure, cyber-bullying, devolution of social and emotional skill & connection, exploitation and deceit. This workshop will educate and enlighten participants the ins and outs of what kids are doing, learning and playing online, the positive & negative effects of this activity, and present practical and plausible ways to ensure our kids are safe and stay sharp as they battle with the double-edged swords of technology. Information, description, tools and strategies will be presented along with further resources, publications and websites (how ironic) that are useful for parents, educators and care-givers in this topic area.
This session is designed to provide information on the two most common mental health issues one might encounter in a school setting. In the workshop, we will look at anxiety and depression in children- what are the signs and symptoms, what the different types are, and what the latest research recommends for treatment of these very common childhood illnesses.
