Spatial reasoning abilities better predict future math success than verbal or math skills. Researcher Doug Clements claims that children will not develop an understanding of number and operations well unless they also learn spatial reasoning. This practical, hands-on workshop will focus on an overview of spatial reasoning, the critical role it plays across the math strands, and how it is embedded within the expectations in the Alberta curriculum. We will explore a wide variety of spatial reasoning activities that use visualization, concrete materials, and technology to promote both conceptual understanding and skill development. Educators will leave with a rich repertoire of activities that can be embedded into their existing math programs.

This learning opportunity is being offered through curriculum implementation funding from Alberta Education.
