Participants will:

  • Learn advanced skills in the group facilitation process - participants will learn what it "means" to teach social skills in a play-based environment and will spend time roleplaying through the Lego group process to practice facilitation skills: planning, time management (keeping the group moving forward), motivation, leadership, empowerment
  • Develop skills necessary to manage group behavioural issues. Participants will work to problem solve around conflict resolution through the use of creative therapeutic self-regulation strategies
  • Acquire advanced training in social communication strategies. Participants will spend time on perfecting the art of social communication/ language (syntax, semantics, and pragmatics) to interact with others in a host of situations, from entering peer groups to resolving conflicts. We will discuss social thinking vocabulary, the zones of regulation, active "whole body" listening, and tips for talking with parents. We will pay particular attention to the following 4 goals of social communication.
  1. Social attention to situation and people
  2. Gather information to consider the social cues and connect to prior knowledge to make meaning of what’s going on (e.g. interpret)
  3. Problem solve how to respond based on one’s personal social goals
  4. Respond to information
  • learn creative colloborative build projects (cost saving ideas). Participants will learn creative free building prompts that goes beyond the use of Lego instructional kits. 

This learning opportunity is being offered through curriculum implementation funding from Alberta Education.
