Join Lyn Stone for 4, 90 minute sessions on Spelling for Life. Participants will be granted access to a resources hub for required pre-reading and viewing in preparation for the live sessions.
Session 1- Tools for spelling
Participants will learn about teaching the origins of exceptions, affixes, word families and homophones. These tools can then be called on at any time as they go through the lessons in the later parts of the course.
Session 2 - The single letters
Having grappled with some spelling tools and basics, it's time to look at the building blocks of written language: vowels and consonants. There are rules surrounding both and we will discover how to teach those rules systematically and explicitly.
Session 3 - Letter combinations
Participants will be examining the roles of Final Silent E, the letter Y and its uses, and will also be taking the single vowels and combining them with other letters to reveal deeper spelling rule structures.
Session 4 - Syllables, doubling and morphemes
This section gives techniques for teaching the spelling of polysyllabic words, how to apply doubling and affixing rules, and ends with a highly engaging, extremely useful tool to derive a large number of suffixes and stable endings.
